Silicon, shallow junction, Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes (APDs) can be manufactured with complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) compatible processing steps and provide singlephoton-counting sensitivity. As we move toward providing integrated detection of increasingly nanoscopic-sized emissions, small-area detectors and arrays that can be easily integrated into marketable systems will be required. Geiger-mode diodes with diameters of 10, 15, and 20 mm are manufactured and the dark counts measured at 10 V above breakdown are 9, 95, and 990, respectively, at room temperature. The simulated and measured optical crosstalk is found to be significantly reduced for detector pixel pitches beyond 300 mm. The activation energy of the dark count with temperature is found to be 0.58 eV, representing an order of magnitude drop in dark count for every 27°C decrease in temperature. The responsivity of the detectors, without antireflection coatings, is found to peak between 550 and 650 nm with a photon detection probability of 43% at 10 V above the breakdown voltage. The low dark counts of the detectors and high photon detection probability highlight the potential these detectors have for fluorescence decay experiments and also in future integrated photonic detection systems. © 2003 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Neural Imaging Using Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes
Introduction: This paper analyses the ability of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) for neural imaging. The current trend in the production of SPADs moves toward the minimumdark count rate (DCR) and maximum photon detection probability (PDP). Moreover, the jitter response which is the main measurement characteristic for the timing uncertainty is progressing. Methods: The neural imaging pro...
متن کاملComplete single-photon counting and timing module in a microchip.
A complete module for single-photon counting and timing is demonstrated in a single chip. Features comparable with or better than commercially available macroscopic modules are obtained by integration of an active-quenching and active-reset circuit in complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology together with a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD). The integrated SPAD has a 12-microm-diam...

متن کاملMultiplexed Analysis Using Time-Resolved Near-IR Fluorescence for the Detection of Genomic Material
While fluorescence continues to be an important tool in genomics, new challenges are being encountered due to increased efforts toward miniaturization reducing detection volumes and the need for screening multiple targets simultaneously. We have initiated work on developing time-resolved near-IR fluorescence as an additional tool for the multiplexed analyses of DNA, either for sequencing or mut...
متن کاملA Photon - Counting Array Detector System for Fast and Sensitive Analysis of Protein Microarrays
Fluorescence measurements on protein microarrays demand photodetectors with ultra-high sensitivity, low noise and parallel readout capability. A novel compact instrument capable of ultra-sensitive analysis of multiple proteins in a customized microarray has been designed and implemented. This system is based on a monolithic 6×8 array of single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs). The SPAD detector ...
